DIY: Corkboard Glitter Art

While going through some art supplies in the garage, I can across a pile of left over corkboards from a previous wall art project, as well as, this old picture frame backing with a stand. I'm not really sure why I kept the latter but for this project I'm glad that I did. If you would like to know how to create your own corkboard glitter art, just continue reading.

Materials used: old corkboard square tile, old picture frame backing with stand, box cutter, pencil, paintbrush, E6000 glue, glossy mod podge and extra fine glitter

Step 1: Use the old picture frame backing as a template and make an outline of it on the corkboard square tile.

Step 2: Carefully cut corkboard down to size with box cutter. If you have an unsteady hand, you can use a ruler as a guide to make sure the cut is straight.

Step 3: Draw pattern onto corkboard with pencil.

(UPDATE: I initially tried to draw my design with pencil but it was too light, so I ended up outlining the design with a sharpie similar in color to my glitter)

Step 4: Glue corkboard to old picture frame backing with E6000 glue. Design side up of course. Let the two items bond for 30 minutes before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Make sure corkboard is clean/ free of debris then working in sections apply a layer of mod podge over the design with a paintbrush then sprinkle the glitter on top of the mod podge layer. Make sure all of the mod podge is covered and let the layer dry for 15-20 minutes.

Step 6: Remove/ dump the excess glitter. I used a sheet of printer paper to collect the excess glitter and then slightly bent the paper in half to pour the glitter back into the container for use again.

FYI: If you want the glitter layer to be opaque, simply repeat steps 5 and 6.

Step 7: Once glitter layer has dried (give it a few hours) apply another layer of mod podge over the glitter and let it dry. This step is basically for sealing in the glitter so it doesn't fall off with use of the corkboard.

Step 8: Let piece dry for several hours, preferably overnight before use.

Step 9: Enjoy your one of a kind corkboard!

Until next time, let inspiration find you!
